Brillion Public Library Reading Garden
"The Brillion Public Library Reading Garden will provide individuals with a comfortable space where they can learn, gather, and explore. The garden will encourage the Brillion Community and surrounding areas to engage with nature and literature."
Our goal is to expand our library into the outdoors. This space will feature raised garden beds, musical instruments, book themed attractions, leisure and program areas by utilizing the existing greenspace on the North end of the library. The area will provide an outdoor space in which individuals can gather in a multitude of ways. Whether they come to relax and enjoy the outdoors or to play musical instruments with their kids, the goal of this project is to provide individuals with a comfortable place where they can rest, breathe, and just “be.”
The garden will encourage individuals to engage with nature and experience something new to Calumet County. This project will also help the library provide a variety of educational programs we weren't properly equipped to offer before. An example of this is the addition of raised garden beds and the agricultural lessons we can teach with them. Our hope is that having the Reading Garden outside will also serve to welcome community members inside our building. This, in turn, will draw attention to the other great assets the library offers like chromebooks, reference materials, educational programs, and other connections to resources within the community. The garden project has received full support and approval by the RDA, Plan Commission, and City Council.
Another core goal of this is to further enhance the Brillion Community and give back to the individuals in the area. We will have hotspots throughout the garden to provide internet access for people that may not otherwise have that resource. We have explored donating the food we grow in the raised garden beds to the local food pantry. This is meant to be a space that benefits the surrounding communities in a positive and enriching way.
